Description
Eris Station spreads along the inside curve of a deep stress fracture running two-thirds of the host asteroid’s length, sheltered from micrometeoroid bombardment by the overhanging rock above. From an approaching vessel, the settlement presents a chaotic tapestry of mismatched habitation modules, welded shipping containers, and scavenged hull plates patched together with alloys that don’t match. Navigation beacons blink in an irregular, stuttering pattern that predates corporate standardization—their arrhythmic flashing itself a signal that this is not a corporate port.
The interior defies any conventional geometry. Corridors angle sharply to avoid structural weaknesses, doorways open into floors or ceilings depending on how modules were welded together, and ladders and hand-lines replace stairs entirely. Warm-spectrum LEDs salvaged from habitation modules cast long shadows through the passages, their output dimmed to conserve power. Permanent residents form the settlement’s core. Seven docking booms extend along the asteroid’s crevice face, though typically only three to five are functional at any given time. The number has always been aspirational—no resident can recall a time when all seven worked simultaneously. One boom vents atmosphere at a slow but measurable rate, and two lack functional capture clamps entirely.
The Gap, an open framework zone between major module clusters, serves as the settlement’s de facto commons. One wall consists of exposed asteroid rock, its dark surface glittering faintly where carbonaceous inclusions catch the light.
