The region is a lethal confluence of natural debris from a catastrophic asteroid collision, abandoned military minefields from the Belt Uprising of 2157, and the accumulated wreckage of more than thirty confirmed ship losses over the past century. Its name derives from the three massive asteroid fragments — Cerberus-A, Cerberus-B, and Cerberus-C — that bracket the corridor, their gravitational influence compressing shipping routes and churning debris into chaotic patterns.
The Choke is rated a Class-IV Hazard by the Independent Operator Guild, a designation that makes commercial insurance effectively unobtainable. Only military vessels, fugitives, and those with no alternative attempt a crossing, and the historical casualty rate averages 1.4 hull losses per year.
Description
Approaching the Cerberus Choke from the Pallas side, a vessel’s proximity sensors register debris counts climbing steadily until the display becomes a blizzard of fragmentary returns. Visually, the first sign is a faint, pervasive shimmer through forward viewports — sunlight reflecting off billions of silicate shards suspended in the vacuum, a sight pilots describe as flying into ground glass. The narrowest portion of the lane threads between the three Cerberus bodies, massive dark fragments that orbit a common barycenter in a slow gravitational dance, their irregular shapes generating micro-wells that deflect smaller debris unpredictably.
Inside the lane, the environment becomes a continuous material assault. Micrometeroids ping against the hull in a constant high-pitched percussion, larger fragments groan against mag-shielding, and hull temperatures can rise to hundreds of degrees from friction with the tenuous dust cloud — a phenomenon more typical of atmospheric reentry. The minefield adds its own menace: Mark-7 “Harrier” autonomous mines, many still active with degraded identification systems that no longer distinguish corporate hulls from independent traffic, drift in lethal clusters that can detonate simultaneously. The Choke’s most frequent users are independent operators with no alternative — ships running contraband, stolen data, fugitives, or unsanctioned medical supplies. A shadow economy of navigational data has emerged around the region: pilots who survive a transit sell sensor logs and minefield maps to brokers on Ceres Station, who compile and resell “Choke charts” to the next desperate crew. These charts are notoriously unreliable given the shifting debris and drifting mines, but they marginally improve survival odds. Scattered throughout the region are hidden caches and repurposed TMC infrastructure — derelict comms relays and emergency hideouts occupied by squatters whose presence is tolerated only because no authority is willing to enter the Choke to remove them. The ongoing lethality of the minefield, a direct consequence of unfulfilled decommissioning obligations under the Ceres Accords, remains a political embarrassment invoked by independent operators as evidence of corporate malfeasance.

- Cerberus-B: The largest of the three anchor fragments, a dark carbonaceous mass riddled with impact craters that emits a low-level magnetic field strong enough to degrade unshielded sensor packages, complicating navigation through the corridor’s narrowest point.
- Active Minefield: An estimated 40–60% of the original Uprising-era ordnance remains operational, much of it with degraded IFF logic. Decommissioned units are indistinguishable from debris without close-range scanning, while active mines retain a faint electromagnetic hum detectable by experienced sensor operators.
- Ghost Fleet: The wreckage of at least thirty-one vessels lost since 2130 is embedded in the debris field. The ICS Odysseus, a TMC ore hauler lost in 2134, remains visible in a slow decaying orbit around Cerberus-C. The Gilded Thorn, destroyed in 2168, still emits trace radiation from its reactor core and serves as an informal navigation marker for modern transits.
