Free Margin
Overview
The Free Margin is an unincorporated stretch of the asteroid belt defined not by formal boundaries but by the absence of everything that marks controlled space: no corporate relay network, no Terran Safety and Resource Authority jurisdiction, no contract enforcement, and no official cartographic recognition. Its inner edge begins roughly where the last active corporate relay node goes dark and stays dark; its outer edge dissolves into dead space where fuel economics make regular travel impractical. At any given time, somewhere between four and nine thousand people move through it — independent haulers, claim camp crews, and the transient traffic that connects them — though no census has ever been taken, and none ever will be.
The Free Margin matters because it is the only region of the belt where independent operators work entirely outside corporate and governmental oversight. That absence of structure is not an accident or a failure of enforcement. It is actively maintained.
Description
The Free Margin has no clean edges and no uniform character. Its inner arc runs through a stretch of the mid-belt where large rock formations and old claim-blast debris create persistent radar scatter — irregular drift patterns and gravitational interference from cluster formations make the region difficult to map at scale, and any chart produced here becomes unreliable within months as debris shifts and obstacles are deliberately relocated. Corporate survey vessels have run this region repeatedly and produced charts that are accurate for approximately six seasons before they are not. Independent operators know this. They use it.
The debris fields read in layers: fast, irregular fragments in the foreground moving at varying velocities; a slow-rolling middle band that registers on radar as continuous interference; and consolidated rock formations in the background that offer false shelter. Pockets of genuine radar silence sit behind the largest of these formations — dead zones where a ship can sit invisible to anything outside. The belt outside a ship here has a texture absent near stations, which dampen local scatter with active suppression fields. In the Free Margin there is no suppression. A pilot trained on station-adjacent operations reads the constant low-level radar returns as system fault. For belt-born operators, it is the absence of scatter that signals danger.
Society
Nobody controls the Free Margin, and this is a logistical fact rather than a political one. The region is too large, too irregular, and too sparsely populated for any operator or coalition to enforce territory in a conventional sense. What functions in place of governance is a reputation economy enforced by scarcity and isolation.
Independent ore-haulers form the mobile backbone of the region — modified ships with heavier shielding, stripped crew quarters, and exterior propellant reserves that no corporate safety inspector would pass. These vessels are maintained by their crews rather than by company technical systems, and the choices visible on a hull — a new radar array beside a failing water recycler, pristine life support beside a patched sensor suite — tell an experienced eye something real about the people aboard. Claim camps range from two-person pressure-tent operations anchored to a rock formation to larger installations like Coldrock Seven, which serves as waypoint, supply depot, and informal message exchange. Everything in a claim camp is built to be moved or abandoned.
Social entry into the Free Margin is governed by a simple principle: demonstrate belonging, or be treated as a liability. An unknown ship on a standard station profile, broadcasting nothing, sitting in a dead zone, reads as lost, corporate, or running dirty — any of which is a problem. What shifts the calculation is knowledge that cannot be faked: belt terminology, navigation habits, the specific way an experienced operator references a claim or a contact. Institutional bearing — the speech patterns and authority assumptions that come from working within a corporate or military hierarchy — reads poorly here. It signals someone who expects structures around them to confirm their position. In the Free Margin, there are no such structures.
Notable Features
The Thread Network is the Free Margin’s primary communications infrastructure — a non-corporate web of relay nodes and burst-signal repeaters that carries information between operators who have no access to corporate channels. Node codes are personal and shared by call sign only between people with established reason to trust each other. Offering a Thread contact is a significant gesture; a contact who knows someone only by call sign knows them as a presence in the network, not as a person with a traceable history. This is deliberate, and it runs in both directions.
Dead zones — pockets of genuine radar silence behind consolidated debris formations — function as neutral ground. Unwritten conventions govern their use: no approach without prior contact, no approach running dark without an established call sign. These rules exist nowhere in writing and are understood by everyone who works the region.
Coldrock Seven, the largest named settlement in the inner Free Margin, operates as the closest thing the Free Margin has to a hub — a supply depot and waypoint that serves as a benchmark of how far inside the region an operator needs to reach before they have anything like a stable position. Its precise location varies by source, for the straightforward reason that it moves.
