Gyre 9

Locations Belt Wars

Overview

Gyre 9 is a derelict ore processing drum repurposed as an independent trading hub, drifting in the debris-strewn outskirts of corporate-controlled space. Once part of a larger mining operation, it now serves as a transient sanctuary for scavengers, fugitives, and traders who operate outside corporate oversight. Its location—far enough from major transit lanes to avoid scrutiny but close enough to salvage routes—makes it a critical node for those living on the fringes.

Description

The drum’s interior is a decaying industrial relic, its curved walls streaked with rust and mineral deposits from its past life. The floor is a patchwork of scavenged plating welded over old conveyor systems, creating an uneven surface that shifts underfoot. Lighting is a chaotic mix of jury-rigged work lamps and bioluminescent fungus creeping through cracked conduits, casting sickly yellow shadows. The slow rotation generates a weak artificial gravity, enough to keep objects from floating freely but not enough to feel entirely stable—condensation drips sideways, and peripheral vision plays tricks on the unwary.

The air is thick with the scent of burnt wiring, fungal growth, and the metallic tang of aging coolant lines. Every surface bears marks of its second life: weld scars from makeshift stalls, carbon stains from illicit heating units, and the faint echoes of safety warnings long stripped away. The space hums with the deep groan of stressed bearings and the intermittent whine of damaged electronics, a constant reminder of its precarious existence.

Society

Gyre 9 has no formal governance, only shifting alliances of necessity. The Stall Collective dominates the central concourse, enforcing unwritten trade rules through silent consensus and the threat of exile. Above them, the Gantry Crew watches from elevated walkways, extracting “observation fees” from nervous visitors. Deeper in the drum’s bowels, the Pipe Rats squat in repurposed coolant channels, controlling access to the drum’s scarce water filtration systems.

Corporate enforcers are rare but feared—when they arrive, the drum’s inhabitants communicate through coded signals: a dropped tool, a specific cough, the flicker of a light. Survival here depends on reading these signs and knowing when to vanish.

Notable Features

  • The Collapsed Ceiling: A jagged tear in the drum’s upper plating, where corroded metal still flakes away in vibrations. It serves as an emergency exit and a grim landmark.
  • Coolant Stall: A trading post built into the remains of an industrial heat exchanger, run by a silent operator who communicates through a battered text display and the occasional thump of a wrench.
  • The Blind Corridor: A maintenance passage with missing floor grates, favored by corporate enforcers and ambush predators alike. Those who enter unprepared rarely leave.

Gyre 9 is a place of rust and desperation, where every exchange is weighed against survival. Visitors quickly learn: trust is currency, and the walls have eyes.
