Overview

Number Seven is the informal designation for Shaft 7 and its attached service corridor, 7-S, part of the Vesper Array mining platform’s environmental safety grid. Located in Sector 4’s high-pressure interface zone, the shaft functions as a primary atmospheric buffer channel—a vertical bore 142 meters tall, lined with six independently sealable baffle gates designed to contain explosive decompression. The adjacent corridor provides horizontal access for inspection and monitoring at the mid-deck level. Following a catastrophic hull breach and partial baffle failure, the shaft is locked in breach-containment lockdown, and the sealed corridor has become both a diagnostic station and a site of unresolved loss.

Description

The corridor is a narrow, unpainted duralloy passage worn smooth by decades of use. Amber emergency lights pool in small circles along the deck, leaving stretches of near-darkness between functional fixtures; ceiling panels are missing in multiple places, exposing a tangle of aged and patched cable conduits. A fine, greasy black dust—vaporized lubricant and carbonized residue from post-breach electrical fires—coats handrails, terminal casings, and cable bundles. The air, kept breathable by portable scrubber carts, is cold enough to fog breath near the sealed hazard barriers and carries a sharp, metallic tang of burnt ozone.

Through three inspection hatches set into the shaft wall, the damage is visible: massive baffle gates warped and frozen mid-closure, vertical gouges where metal peeled away during decompression, and a body-sized dent punched through one gate. The monitoring alcove at the corridor’s far end remains as it was when ventilation technician Jin-Ho Park died at his station—a fold-down jumpseat draped with a worn thermal blanket, a functional diagnostic terminal glowing pale green, and a small open locker containing personal effects.

Society

Before the accident, Number Seven was the solitary workplace of Jin-Ho Park, who monitored pressure arrays, maintained sensor logs, and filed reports in near-total isolation. Other crew entered only with permission. Now the corridor is a liminal space with overlapping, indirect claims. Operations personnel, led by Paz Ochoa, feed data to the terminal remotely but maintain no physical presence. An informal recovery crew retrieved the bodies and marked hazards before withdrawing. Analyst Seren Varga now occupies the alcove, using the terminal to cross-reference maintenance records with Ochoa’s tacit cooperation and the mining foreman’s silent permission. The dead still possess the corridor in a different way: Park’s photograph, blanket, and locker remain untouched, an absence that workers treat with a superstitious hesitation common among those who know the dead are not yet far away.

Notable Features

  • Baffle Gates: Three of the six blast-containment gates failed to seal during the breach. Two remain jammed partially open, their hydraulic rams twisted by differential pressure, and one bears a large unexplained dent.
  • Monitoring Alcove: At the corridor’s end, this cramped niche contains Jin-Ho Park’s jumpseat, thermal blanket, personal locker, and the still-active diagnostic terminal—the last active workstation in the sealed section.
  • Hazard Barriers: Both corridor ends are sealed with red flashing barriers and amber light strips, marking a temporary biohazard and accident zone as recovery continues.
  • Atmospheric Scrubber Carts: Portable units maintain breathable air but do not heat the compartment, creating a sharp temperature gradient and a constant low-frequency hum.
  • Sensory Pressure: The space is defined by the composite drone of pumps and scrubbers, the intermittent thud of hydraulic dampers cycling in the dead shaft, and the cold, greasy air that coats skin and leaves a metallic taste.
