Of Hallen
Overview
Dax Hallen is the independent captain of the Profit Margin, a dilapidated cargo hauler operating on the fringes of the Belt’s economy. A third-generation hauler, Dax navigates the treacherous margins of legitimate and illegitimate trade, taking on runs too risky or unprofitable for corporate fleets. His life revolves around keeping his aging ship airborne, a task that consumes him entirely as he clings to a dwindling legacy.
Background
Born into a family of independent haulers, Dax grew up aboard the Kestrel’s Margin, a ship as worn as the hardscrabble life it supported. Inheriting the vessel at twenty-seven after his father’s death, he rechristened it the Profit Margin and dedicated himself to its survival. For over two decades, he scraped by on low-margin runs and questionable cargo, refusing to admit the ship’s inevitable decline. By forty-nine, he pilots the Margin alone, unwilling to let go of the only thing he’s ever truly owned.
Physical Description
Dax Hallen embodies the worn-down state of his ship. Tall and gaunt, he bears the physical toll of years spent stretching resources and enduring hardship. His face is etched with deep lines, his skin tinged gray from recycled air and chronic fatigue. Frostbite scars from a coolant incident mark his cheeks, flushing red when he’s angry. His pale blue eyes are bloodshot and wary, framed by an uneven brow ridge that gives him a perpetually suspicious expression. His patchy gray hair and mismatched clothing speak to a life of makeshift repairs and endless resourcefulness.
Personality
Dax is defined by his stubbornness, refusing to quit even when logic dictates he should. He is practical and resourceful, honed by decades of keeping the Margin functional. His distrustful nature, shaped by years on the margins, makes him wary of others and quick to assume ulterior motives. This isolation is both a defense mechanism and a consequence of his refusal to rely on anyone but himself.
Relationships
Dax’s relationships are marked by wariness and distance. He views Cade Brennan with a mix of skepticism and grudging respect, distrusting his corporate ties. Captain Ochoa earns his respect for independence but is seen as overly cautious. Above all, Dax’s bond with the Profit Margin defines him, as he equates the ship’s survival with his own identity.
Speech Pattern
Dax speaks in terse, clipped sentences, favoring practicality over unnecessary words. His speech is laced with Belt slang and technical jargon, reflecting his years in the cockpit. A sarcastic edge often sharpens his words, underscoring his distrustful nature.
