Proof Djen
Overview
Proof Djen is an engineering specialist aboard the ICS Valkyrie, responsible for mechanical repairs, extravehicular operations, and damage control. Born and raised in the outer belt, he is a second-generation contract worker with an innate understanding of ship systems but struggles under the weight of past failures. Though highly skilled, his tendency to freeze in high-pressure situations isolates him from his crewmates when they need him most.
Background
Djen was born on Ansible-4, a depleted TMC waystation that functioned as a salvage yard and de facto orphanage. After losing his mother at a young age, he was passed between work crews, learning mechanics through necessity. By his teens, he was traded between ships as a junior mechanic before landing on the Valkyrie, where he found rare stability—until a catastrophic accident during a mission left him haunted by guilt. The incident fractured his confidence, turning his precision into hesitation and his dry humor into silence.
Physical Description
Tall and lean, Djen has the wiry frame of someone raised in microgravity, with limbs that seem too long for his body. His skin is pale from artificial lighting, scattered with freckles from radiation exposure, and his dark eyes have a perpetually startled look. A thin scar traces his left temple, a relic of a childhood injury. His hands, callused and deft, are his most expressive feature, often rubbing a crooked knuckle when stressed. He wears standard-issue coveralls, their faded Valkyrie insignia a reminder of the life he once had.
Personality
Djen is meticulous with machines but paralyzed by human crises, replaying failures until action becomes impossible. Once known for dry humor, he now speaks only when necessary, his silence punctuated by small, superstitious rituals—touching his knuckle before an EVA, avoiding left-footed steps. He works relentlessly, not out of dedication but as penance, terrified that stopping will let his guilt catch up.
Relationships
- Cade Brennan: The Valkyrie’s captain treats Djen with unwavering trust, which only deepens his guilt. He can’t accept Cade’s implicit forgiveness when he hasn’t forgiven himself.
- Seren Varga: The co-pilot’s matter-of-fact confidence in him is both a lifeline and a burden. He fears failing her as he believes he failed Attwell.
- Attwell (deceased): A mentor whose injury—and later death—left Djen with unresolved grief. Attwell’s absence lingers in every repair and every quiet moment.
Speech Pattern
Djen’s technical comms are sharp and efficient, but personal conversations are strained, with long pauses as he searches for words. Under stress, he repeats phrases softly (“Seal’s holding. Holding.”) and defaults to vague, indirect language for emotions. He uses belt-worker shorthand but avoids slang, as if clinging to professionalism in a world that’s already fallen apart.
