Trainee Attwell
Overview
Trainee Attwell is a junior mining technician stationed in the asteroid belt, part of a cohort of Earth-born laborers conscripted into ExoDyne’s Belt Prosperity Initiative. Fresh from Mumbai’s orbital slums, he approaches his dangerous work with earnest enthusiasm, clinging to corporate promises of advancement. His eagerness to impress superiors masks a fatal tendency to prioritize approval over safety—a vulnerability veteran miners quickly exploit.
Background
Born in 2163 Earth’s Mumbai orbital slums, Attwell was drafted at 22 through a labor conscription program targeting citizens with technical aptitude. Unlike most resentful conscripts, he genuinely believed ExoDyne’s propaganda about belt opportunities. Assigned to veteran Pavel as part of a cost-cutting “mentorship” program, he remained oblivious that his role was to absorb hazardous tasks while the cynical miner collected training bonuses.
Physical Description
Standing 1.7 meters with a compact frame, Attwell’s physique betrays his Earth origins—lacking the hardened musculature of veteran belt miners. His hands remain soft, calluses still forming from unfamiliar tools, and his dark brown eyes frequently widen with nervous concentration. The bright orange trainee jumpsuit hangs crisply on him, its unweathered fabric marking his inexperience amid the patched, stained uniforms of seasoned crews.
Personality
Attwell’s defining trait is an anxious eagerness to prove himself, manifesting in compulsive rule-following that collapses under peer pressure. He recites safety protocols verbatim yet folds instantly when veterans imply haste matters more. Desperate for validation, he unconsciously mimics mentors’ mannerisms, from Pavel’s knuckle-cracking to adopting supervisors’ jargon—tells that mark him as an easy target for exploitation.
Relationships
- Pavel: Attwell idolizes his assigned mentor, mistaking the veteran’s negligent shortcuts for wisdom. Pavel delegates lethal maintenance tasks with plausible deniability, knowing the trainee will prioritize obedience over self-preservation.
- Cade Brennan: Their sole interactions involve Cade correcting Attwell’s safety oversights—once fixing his helmet seal, later identifying his body in the wreckage of a preventable disaster.
Speech Pattern
When nervous, Attwell lapses into overly precise Technical English, peppering sentences with half-remembered regulations (“Per atmospheric guideline 12.7—”). He frequently repeats superiors’ statements as uncertain questions (“Seal integrity nominal, right?”), a habit veterans interpret as weakness.
