Drusilla Pocket
Overview
Drusilla Pocket is an isolated bubble of warped spacetime drifting in the sparse Driftways of the Outer Arm. Officially catalogued by the Interstellar Service Authority as Anomalous Spacetime Enclosure 7-Kilo, it is a self-sustaining chaos anchor—a volume where the laws of physics exhibit persistent, non-random variance. Stretching roughly eleven kilometers across, the Pocket occupies a gravitational saddle between dying star systems, maintaining a stable interior that resists external correction. It matters because it represents a rare sanctuary of sustained unpredictability in a cosmos increasingly subject to optimization pressure, and because its quiet, patient strangeness has drawn a small community of permanent residents who prize its absolute otherness.
Description
Approaching Drusilla Pocket is an exercise in trusting instruments that have begun to lie. The boundary announces itself gradually: stars beyond the sphere smear as if viewed through a curved lens, their light shifting through chromatic aberrations. Crossing the membrane triggers a cascade of benign sensory dislocations—visual afterimages of events that have not yet occurred, sound that detaches from its source, and a brief proprioceptive drift that makes visitors feel they occupy two positions at once. Once inside, external sensor returns become unreliable, and a ship is effectively cut off from normal space.
The interior is a tangled, layered environment. At its heart lies the Sump, a dense knot of folded topology roughly 800 meters across, where matter can be stretched toward multiple divergent points at once. Surrounding the Sump are the Echo Ledges—concentric rings of semi-stable debris that provide the only reliable footing. Here, sound behaves strangely: spoken words return after a delay with syllables reordered or meaning recontextualized, as if the Pocket is processing the noise and offering a reply. A vertical fissure called the Slip cuts toward the Sump, a region where time runs roughly 30% faster, aging anything within it. Scattered throughout are Calm Points—small, drifting zones where physics normalizes and everyday activities become briefly possible.
The atmosphere is thin but breathable, hovering around 18–22% oxygen with traces of exotic elements. Temperature averages a cool 12–18°C, pulsing in slow, rhythmic waves. Gravity holds at about 0.92 g, but its direction is a suggestion that can shift toward a visitor’s gaze. Diffuse blue-white light radiates from the boundary membrane itself, casting shadows that sometimes disagree with one another. Sound is dominated by a low, chest-felt thrum from the Sump, layered with the faint echoes and distant, recontextualized voices of the Ledges.
Society
Drusilla Pocket has no government. The ISA designates it a Non-Jurisdictional Anomaly, maintaining only a distant monitoring buoy and explicitly declining to enforce any law within its border. The Pocket’s nature makes institutional control impossible—geometry simply rearranges itself to defuse conflict or separate incompatible individuals.
The closest thing to a resident population is the Hermit Collective, a loose association of perhaps a dozen to thirty sentients who have chosen to dwell permanently inside. They live in adapted shipwrecks and chambers carved into the Echo Ledges, surviving on hydroponics and a fungus that grows on fossilized spacetime. Their informal spokesperson, the Speaker for Stillness, wears a void suit converted into a mobile domicile and communicates in gravelly murmurs shaped by the Pocket’s acoustic quirks. Among the Hermits, the most unusual are the Partially Accommodated—individuals whose bodies have merged with the local topology, such as the Guest, a former hermit whose distributed biological presence now comprises a living, breathing suite of rooms.
Visitors are rare and self-selecting: scientific expeditions, chaos-seeking artists, or desperate fugitives. The Pocket accepts only those who move toward something rather than fleeing something; many who attempt to hide are simply guided back out. Those who stay accept that the Pocket is not a place to be managed but a presence to be lived alongside, one that will never ask permission and never grant it.
Notable Features
- Recontextualizing Acoustics: Sound on the Echo Ledges returns altered, as if the Pocket is commenting. A muttered observation might echo back as a philosophical correction, a footstep as three, or a warning as a whisper.
- The Sump: A gravitational center where matter is multiply stretched through extreme topology, creating partly stabilized debris clouds and probability maps of lost objects.
- The Slip: A fissure of accelerated time where objects age rapidly and observation causes a persistent feeling of lateness.
- Calm Points: Drifting pockets of normal physics vital for repairs, medicine, or simply resting without the bread trying to be in two places at once.
- Self-Illuminating Boundary: The Pocket generates its own twilight glow, sourceless and sufficient, while the membrane itself shimmers with faint ultraviolet bioluminescence visible only in peripheral vision.
